How do you pick between short throw projectors like the BenQ 936ST and 700ST for a golf simulator?

Pick based on mounting location, lumens, and throw ratio, not the model name. Measure your exact screen size and hitting stance distance first, then run those numbers through a projector throw calculator to see which units actually fit your ceiling height and mount position. The BenQ 936ST throws 0.61 versus the AK700ST's 0.81, but the 936ST adds vertical and horizontal lens offset for more mounting flexibility. A 16x9 screen works fine with either despite official ratings capping lower.

How do I calculate the projector throw distance for a golf simulator screen?

Use the manufacturer's online projector throw distance calculator, such as BenQ's at projectorcalculator.benq.com, or the general one at Projector Central. Enter your projector model and target image width, for example 109 inches wide, and it returns the minimum and maximum mounting distance from the screen along with the recommended vertical offset for a ceiling mount. See BenQ throw distance calculator: https://projectorcalculator.benq.com/

Verified research

From the MSS study: what the sensor measures, what it costs to run, and what it needs from the room.

The purpose-built golf-sim flagship: bright 4K laser short-throw for set-and-forget bays.
The MSS verdict

Why people buy

4000 ANSI lumens, bright, punchy image on impact screens

8.4 ms lag (1080p 240Hz) for instant shot feedback

20,000-hr laser, zero lamp swaps for the life of the sim

0.69 to 0.83:1 short throw fits tight golf-sim bays

Trade-offs

No optical lens shift, placement must be exact

4K 60Hz lag is 33.4 ms, low lag needs 1080p modes

Premium $2,899 price vs gaming-projector rivals

Auto Screen Fit is digital, corner-fit trims sharpness

The fine print

No lens shift: the powered 1.2x zoom helps, but the mount must match the fixed 102.5% offset; Auto Screen Fit is digital keystone and trims resolution. Best lag (8.4 ms) requires 1080p 240Hz.
