Is a 4K projector worth the extra cost for a golf simulator screen?

Name: Optoma GT2000HDR Short Throw Golf Simulator Projector
Brand: Optoma
SKU: optoma-gt2000-projector
Price: 1099 USD

It depends on your screen size and viewing distance. On a typical 10.5ft by 8ft golf simulator screen, a 4K projector like the Optoma GT2000HDR will actually output around 2880x2160 in the custom aspect ratio used for simulators, not true 4K, but it still looks noticeably sharper than 1080p. If budget is tight, a non 4K projector is fine to start and you can upgrade later; if you can afford it, buy the 4K unit and use its corner correction for off center mounting.

Bright 1080p laser short throw with gaming-grade lag, a set-and-forget golf sim workhorse
The MSS verdict

Why people buy

3,500 ANSI lumens punches through ambient garage light

0.496:1 short throw, 120-in image from ~4.4 ft, no shadows

30,000-hr laser: no lamp swaps for the sim's lifetime

8.6 ms input lag (1080p 240Hz) feels instant on sim play

Trade-offs

No lens shift or optical zoom, placement must be exact

Native 1080p only; 4K input gets downscaled

Fan hits 34 dB at full brightness

Costs more than lamp-based short throws

The fine print

Fixed lens with zero shift and no optical zoom: mount distance and height must match the 0.496:1 throw and fixed ~116% offset exactly, digital keystone is the only fallback and costs image quality.
