Question 1

Which impact screen is quieter for a garage sim room under a bedroom?

Accepted Answer

The Indoor Golf Shop premium screen and enclosure has been reported as relatively quiet and durable even with a bedroom directly above the garage bay. Ball impact noise on that screen was noticeably quieter than driver swing noise through the floor, so screen choice alone will not fully solve noise if impact and swing sound both carry upward; soundproofing the ceiling or adding foam paneling helps address the rest.

Question 2

Is the Big Moss insert the same size as the SIGPRO Softy strip?

Accepted Answer

No, the Big Moss insert is the same width but about 1.75 inches longer than the SIGPRO Softy. It can be trimmed down to fit if needed. It is not worth swapping a SIGPRO Softy strip for a Big Moss insert until the Softy is actually worn out, since players report the Softy holds up well and stays easy on the joints for years of regular play.

Question 3

How big is the hitting area detection zone on a golf simulator launch monitor?

Accepted Answer

About 12 by 10 feet on a SIGPRO Softy mat, based on real world testing with the Spica launch monitor. The ball reads correctly almost anywhere on the mat except right at the very back edge, and putting is also detected off to the side of the hitting area, not just straight ahead.

Question 4

What is the best way to mount a golf impact screen, zip ties or bungees?

Accepted Answer

Use a mix of both. Bungees in the corners with zip ties along the rest of the frame has given good results, since straight zip ties alone were breaking every couple of days. The more give and flex the screen can have, the longer it lasts, so tensioning only at the top rather than pulling it tight all around also extends screen life. A custom setup using angled irons with a bungee and zip tie mix, plus a second layer of netting behind the main screen, is another way to add durability.

Question 5

How long does a SIGPRO Softy hitting strip typically last?

Accepted Answer

A SIGPRO Softy has been reported to last about two years of regular play before needing replacement. It stays easy on the joints and feels like taking a real divot, punishing fat shots without pain, but it is not the most durable surface and will develop depressions where it gets hit most over time.

Question 6

What core components do I need to build a golf simulator setup?

Accepted Answer

You need a screen, projector, frame, turf, hitting strip, and a PC to run the simulation software. You can start cheaper by skipping the screen and projector and hitting into a net while watching ball flight on a TV instead. A hitting strip is worth investing in since it takes the most wear. A SIGPRO Softy hitting strip paired with a SIGPRO 12 enclosure from Shop Indoor Golf has been reported as easy to set up and reliable, and Carl's Place is another option people have had good results with.
